Question: Is one intention to fast for the month of Ramaḍān sufficient or does the fasting person have to renew their intention every day?
Answer: This is an issue that the Scholars have dealt with from the early times, which is the affair of having the intention from the night prior to the fast itself. This issue revolves around the ḥadīth of Ḥafṣah (رضى الله عنها) wherein the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, “Whoever does not have the niyyah for fasting before fajr then there is no fast for that person.” The People of Knowledge mentioned that this speaks of the wājib fasts and not the supererogatory fast. The most correct view is that of Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah and Shaykh Muḥammad Ṣāliḥ Ibn ʿUthaymīn, which is that one intention is sufficient…
