Lecture Summary
Shaykh Muhammad as-Sowmalee (hafidhahullah) initiated this profoundly beneficial admonition by reminding us to have taqwa of Allah in both open and in secret and recited to us some of the verses where Allah praises this noble trait.
Getting into the topic, Shaykh Sowmalee mentioned that in Soorah al-Baqarah Allah spoke about the believers in about four ayaat, the disbelievers in two and the hypocrites in the thirteen ayaat that follow and surely they are even more dangerous to the Muslims than the jews and christians. He explained that the word ‘nifaaq’ comes from the root‘nafaqa’ which means to exit and a ‘nafaq’ is a tunnel that has a path going through it that leads to an exit. He proceeded to define the term nifaaq linguistically as well as legislatively. Our Shaykh then said that hypocrisy is of two types: major and minor and thus explained both and continued to quote and comment on some of the ayaat whereAllah mentions the munaafiqoon.
From the traits of hypocrisy as outlined by Shaykh Muhammad are:
- They are the most frequent of liars
- They have two tongues
- They have the most beautiful bodies and finest of speech but have the filthiest of hearts
- They are undecided in their doubts
- They are always wishing that hardship would befall the believers
- They are similar to one another – one vile breed; they command the evil and forbid the good
For every point throughout the lecture, the Shaykh (hafidhahullah) provided abundant proofs from the Book of Allah, the Sunnah of His Messenger (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) as well as the statements of Ahlul ‘Ilm.
