Lecture Summary
The Shaykh opened his discussion with the words of the Prophet (sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) defining success as being patient in the face of tribulation. He explained that happiness is found in avoiding fitnah (trials and tribulations) which he describes as the destroyer of hearts which in turn destroys one’s deen (religion). He then quoted the hadeeththat illustrates the effect that fitnah has on the hearts of mankind in that the heart either rejects the trial resulting in a white dot being placed on it or it becomes harmed by the trial resulting in a black dot being placed on it. The Shaykhappealed to us to be safe guarders of our deen and that of families against becoming victims of a hardened and blackened heart. He then guided us to how to nurture our children to obtain a firm and white heart. Firstly, he advised us to plant in our children’s hearts a love for Allah, His glorification, His Mightiness and His Power by showing them how these are exemplified in the visible signs of His creation. He went into depth offering numerous examples of such signs. He further directed us to demonstrate the Might of Allah in sustaining and preserving these great signs from disintegration and that natural disasters are a signal of Allaah’s reminder to His slaves that we are in need of Him. Secondly, the Shaykh advised us to show them the obedience of Allah’s creation to Him with the most right being given to human beings. Thirdly, he taught us to explain to our children Allah’s great qadr (decree), that everything that happens is preordained and written in a book 50,000 years before the creation of the Universe. Therefore we must teach the children that no one can inflict harm on anyone nor cause benefit to anyone except by the decree of Allahand that the qadr is unchangeable. Fourthly, we must emphasis the purpose of our creation which is to worship and obey Allah. The Shaykh urged us to illustrate this as the path of success leading to a tremendous reward promised by Allah, planting in their hearts a growing desire and lust for obtaining this and consequently a dreadful fear for the fire. The last advice offered by the Shaykh is to make them aware of the beautiful descriptions of jannah (paradise) which will aid in increasing their striving.
May Allaah grant us the tawfeeq (success) to practice the Qur’aan and Sunnah upon the understanding of the salaf us saalih in our lives and to raise our children upon that. And may Allah grant us good ending
