The questioner asked: As-Salām ʿalaykum wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuhu.
Ḥayyāk Allāh Our Shaykh, May Allāh (سبحانه وتعالى) bless you.
If you would, lately, many of the youth have fashioned their hair in the manner shown in the picture below this message. Is this manner of styling one’s hair permissible?
Likewise, what is your advice to these individus and their parents? May Allāh (سبحانه وتعالى) reward you and grant you good. Āmīn”
Shaykh Sālim Bāhmiḥriz (حفظه الله تعالى)
answers saying:
“May Allāh bless you my brother. This (hairstyle) is not the way of the people of good morals and good character from the Muslims that implement the Sunnah in all avenues of their life, in clothing, appearance, and in their worship. Rather this is the way of immoral individuals. It resembles and imitates the people of the west and (it resembles) the open sinners amongst them.
This is a form of imitating the open sinners and it has no origin in Islām.
The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade cutting some of the hair and leaving some (of the hair) and this (hairstyle) is included in that (prohibition) since it portrays the head in a certain shape, (making it look) as if he took bits and pieces out of his head.
Also, these hairstyles are most common amongst women. Some of them do this with their hair. If they do that between themselves without displaying it to non maḥram men, then they might be excused for such a hair cut, because from the nature of women is that they beautify themselves, even though I see no beauty in this picture. Rather I see that it is ugly, and I ask Allāh (سبحانه وتعالى) for safety.
So my advice to my brothers and sons from the youth, may Allāh bless them all, is that they should leave off these things that came about in current times. If a person sees someone with such a haircut, he would be accused of being a sinner and an oppressor.
“All praise is due to Allāh, the Lord of all of creation and may prayers and peace be upon the Messenger of Allāh, and upon his family and all of his companions.
To proceed:
These types of imported customs and hairstyles are from the influence of shayṭān upon the human being. It is (considered) changing the creation of Allāh (سبحانه وتعالى) in addition to distorting the natural features and form of the human being.
Allāh, (سبحانه وتعالى), has created the human in the best of statures. However shayṭān deceives them and (makes them) change their appearance to that which is repulsive.
This is from the dissolution of the fiṭrah (i.e. the natural disposition). As a result, they do not differentiate between good and evil, and between that which pleases Allāh, the Lord of creation and that which does not please Him.
If (it is the case that) these individuals who wear these clothes and have these hairstyles are disbelievers, then we say, “After associating partners with Allāh and disbelief, there is no sin (i.e. because they have committed the greatest sin, and all other sins they engage in are less severe).
However, if those doing so are Muslims, then it is obligatory upon them to repent to Allāh (سبحانه وتعالى) and not allow shayṭān to deceive them.
Allāh has informed us that there will be those who change the creation of Allāh and that shayṭān encourages this.
Also, the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) prohibited imitating the kuffār.
Likewise, the individual will be raised up with those he imitates. The Prophet (ﷺ) stated, مَنْ تَشَبَّهَ بِقَوْمٍ, فَهُوَ مِنْهُمْ *”Whoever imitates a people is from them.” (Abū Dāwūd)
Concerning this external alteration of the creation of Allāh (in imitating the kuffār), it leads to inwardly loving those one imitates. And the person will be raised with those who he loves.
Thus, it is obligatory upon the Muslim to follow the guidance of the Prophet (ﷺ) and be cautious of the deception of shayṭān. He should also be keen to preserve the soundness of his heart. This is because these types of affairs happen due to the corruption of the hearts and the degeneration of the natural disposition (of the human being) and this is undoubtedly impermissible and in oppositon to the guidance of Islām and the fiṭrah (the original nature of the human being).
Allāh (سبحانه وتعالى) knows best and may He send prayers, peace and blessings upon our Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ).”
I advise the parents of these youth that they rebuke and discipline them. They should forbid them from such matters and reprimand them if they insist on that (hairstyle).
Cut his hair, discipline him and reprimand him. That is how a Muslim should be. He should be diligent and careful over his religion, his family, his kids, and those around him so that they become pious in their character, appearance, statements, and actions.
This is my advice to the male youth and likewise to their parents. Leave off such things!
May Allāh (عز وجل) grant you all success and may Allāh bless you all”
Shaykh Ṣalāḥ Kantūsh Al-ʿAdanī (حفظه الله تعالى)
said:
“With the Name of Allāh the Most Merciful the Most Beneficent.
All praise is due to Allāh and may prayers, peace and blessings be upon His prophet and chosen one, and upon his family and companions and those who follow and support him.
To begin, I ask Allāh (عز وجل) to grant us and you success in all kinds of obedience to Him (سبحانه وتعالى) and that He distance us from all sins, for surely Our Lord is the One who answers supplications.
As for what you mentioned regarding using these things in one’s hair or braiding it in the manner showed in the picture you sent, then we advise the youth to fear Allāh, the Most Exalted. Their example should be the righteous people and those who have good character and exemplary behavior. Allāh rewards the righteous and those who have good character and noble manners with His love and will bestow His pleasure upon them.
So if it is that you love Allāh, then follow His commands and refrain from His prohibitions. Allāh (سبحانه وتعالى) has stated:
(قُلْ إِن كُنتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ ٱللَّهَ فَٱتَّبِعُونِى يُحْبِبْكُمُ ٱللَّهُ) {Say (O Muḥammad صلى الله عليه وسلم to mankind): “If you (truly) love Allāh, then follow me (i.e. accept Islāmic Monotheism, follow the Qur’ān and the Sunnah), Allāh will love you …} [Sūrah Āli ʿImrān 3:31]
And remember that Allāh has promised you Jannah. If you are upright in the most complete manner, Allāh (سبحانه وتعالى) is pleased with this and Allāh will love you and give you what you hope for.
May Allāh guide us and you to good behavior and May Allāh send prayers upon our Prophet Muḥammad, his family and all his companions.
Shaykh Dr ʿArafāt Bin Ḥasan Al-Muḥammadī (حفظه الله وبركاته)
The Shaykh inquired, “Is this popular amongst the kuffār?”
The questioner, “Yes, it is very popular, especially amongst rappers and those that imitate them.”
The Shaykh responded, “Then it is (considered) from the habits of the kuffār. It is a repulsive custom found amongst them.
It (the hairstyle) is not permissible for a Muslim, and in the general sense (it is not permissible) for the Muslims to imitate them. So long as you say that it is common amongst singers and rappers, then it is not permissible for the Muslims to imitate these immoral people who are both disbelievers and immoral.”
