Praying Ṣalāḥ In Clothes That One Slept In by Shaykh Ḥasan Ṣomālī

Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn (رحمه الله) was asked this very question,

السؤال: لديه سؤالٌ آخر يقول فيه: هل يجوز للمصلي في بيته أن يصلي بالملابس الخاصة بالنوم مثل الفوطة والبيجامة والبنطلون ونحو ذلك؟ وإنني أقصد بذلك قيام الليل.

“Is it allowed for a person to pray in their house in their night clothing (like their pajamas)?”

الجواب: الشيخ: كل ثيابٍ طاهرة مباحة إذا كانت تستر العورة فإنه يجوز الصلاة بها ولو كانت في ثياب النوم.

“Every type of clothing that is pure, lawful and covers the ʿawrah is permissible to pray in, even if it is a person’s night clothing.” Then he clarified the answer by saying,

ولا يشترط ثيابٌ معينة إلا أنه لا بد أن تكون الثياب طاهرةً ومباحة وساترة، فإذا توفرت هذه الشروط فلا بأس أن يصلي بها.

 “It is not a condition that you wear a particular type of clothing. However, it is a must that the clothing be:

(طاهرةً) Pure – meaning there cannot be any impurity on it; no Najāsah,
(مباحة) Lawful – it cannot be stolen, and
(ساترة) Concealing – It must conceal the ʿA

“If these conditions are met, then there is nothing wrong with praying in this clothing.”
