A special Ramaḍān Question and Answer session was held for the sisters of Tobago on the 1st of Sha‘bān 1440 (7th April 2019) wherein our teacher Abū Ḥakīm Bilāl (حفظه الله) gave a brief introduction to fasting as an excellent means of curbing one’s desires. He began by highlighting the three main aspects of one’s nafs:
- Al-Nafs al-Lawwāmah (النَّفْسَ اللَّوَّامَةِ): the part of the soul that struggles with guilt after committing a sin.
- Al-Nafs al-Ammārah bi-sū’ (النَّفْسَ لَأَمَّارَةٌ بِالسُّوءِ): the part of the soul that inclines to evil.
- Al-Nafs al-Muṭmaʾinnah (النَّفْسُ الْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ): the part of the soul that is tranquil and upon piety, which we should all yearn and strive for.
Abū Ḥakīm continued by reminding us that Ramaḍān is a month of nurturing and disciplining our soul and is not intended to overburden us but rather purify us by being a month of khayr (goodness), recitation of Qurʾān and ʿibādah (worship).
