• Statements From The Salaf Concerning The End of Ramaḍān and The Day of ʿĪd:
  • ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz came out on the day of ʿīd and he gave a sermon. During his sermon he said, “O people! Indeed you have come out and you have fasted for thirty days and you have stood for thirty nights in prayer and you come out today seeking from Allāh that He accepts from you. And indeed many of the salaf would manifest sadness on this day. It was said to him, “why are you sad, this is a day of happiness and celebration?” He responded by saying, “That is true but indeed I am a servant whose master has commanded him with actions that he should perform and I do not know whether those actions have been accepted.”

• • Imām Ibn Rajab mentioned that Wahab bin al-Ward saw a people laughing on the day of ‘ʿīd, so he said, “If these people have had their fasting accepted from them; then this is not the action of the thankful ones, and if they did not have their fasting accepted, then this is not the attitude of the fearful ones.”

• • Al Ḥasan al-Baṣrī said, ‘Indeed Allāh has made the month of Ramaḍān a period in which His creation compete with His obedience, seeking His good pleasure, and a people they out-did another and they were successful, while another people they stayed back and were destroyed and were in loss. And so I am amazed at a people who are playing and laughing on a day while some people are successful, if they are not from them (i.e the righteous who are successful). And those who carried out and did that which was wrong and foul, then they would be the losers, then I am amazed that they are like this.”

• • ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib used to call out on the last night of Ramaḍān, “If only we knew who is it from those that have been accepted so that we may give him congratulations and who has been prevented from acceptance so that we may console him.”

• • ʽAbdullah ibn Masʽūd said, “ Who is it that is there that we can congratulate him, and who is it that has been prevented and had not had his actions been accepted that we may console him. O you who have been accepted, congratulations to you, and you who have been rejected, may Allāh remove this trial and calamity, for it is indeed a calamity for the one who has been rejected at the end of Ramaḍān.”

• • Mu‘alla ibn al-Fadhl said, “The salaf of this ummah would supplicate to Allāh for six months prior to reach Ramaḍān. Then they used to supplicate to Him for six months after that that Allāh accept it from them.” 

• • Yaḥyá ibn Abī Kathīr when he used to supplicate he used to say, “O Allāh preserve me till Ramaḍān comes (make me see Ramaḍān) and make my Ramaḍān sound for me (make it acceptable) and accept it from me with true acceptance.”

• • Al Ḥasan al-Baṣrī said, “Allāh has made Ramaḍān a season for His creation seeking His good pleasure.”

• • Imām Ibn Rajab said “Indeed ʿīd is not for the one that wears new clothes but ʿīd is for the one whose acts of obedience increase. And ʿīd is not for the one who beautifies himself with his clothes and his riding beast but ʿīd is the one whose sins are forgiven. On the night of ʿīd the creation they go their separate ways and some of them are from the worshippers who have been forgiven and whomsoever gets something of this then for him is ʿīd and anyone else then he is rebelled and he is distanced.”

• • One of the salaf gave a khuṭbah on the day of ʿīd and said, “ Worshippers of Allāh, indeed the affair of the two final abodes are great and the rewards of those who have carried out any action have been lifted and written. And indeed the waiting period for these two parties have been long. So by Allāh, the affair requires from us diligence and not play, and indeed it is nothing but truth and not falsehood and lie. And the affair before us is nothing but death and resurrection, then the reckoning then judgment then the ṣirāṭ and then the punishment or the reward. So whomsoever is successful on that day then he is the successful, and the one that is made to fall into the fire then he is destroyed. All good is in paradise and all evil is in the fire.”
