Question:
Which takes precedence, making Ḥajj or making Hijrah?
Answer:
Hijrah takes precedence because hijrah is a perseveration of one’s dīn. And this is well known when asked to the scholars, “Which takes precedence, making Ḥajj or getting married?” Many of the scholars, past and present, have said that if a person only has enough money to do one of the two and not both, and he has to choose one of the two, then he should choose marriage. Especially when he feels that by not doing so he is going to be exposing himself to doing something ḥarām, then he gives precedence to preserving his dīn and protecting himself from the ḥarām. The same applies to hijrah (moving from a land of disbelief to a land of the Muslims), where a person can freely practice his religion and protect himself from falling into doubts and desires. This takes precedence over Ḥajj, if a person has to make a choice between one or the other.
