Lesson 01 – Introduction to the Creed of al-Rāziyyayn and the Biography of the Two Imāms

Points Covered by The Shaykh:

  • Abū Zurʿah Ar-Rāzī and Abū Ḥātim Ar-Rāzī (رحمه الله) were imāms of ḥādīth.
  • Abū Ḥātim’s son, Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Ar-Raḥmān ibn Abī Ḥātim (رحمه الله) compiled Ar-Rāziyayn.
  • Abū Zurʿah was referred to as ‘Sayyid Al-Ḥuffāẓ’ – Leader of the Memorisers of Ḥadīth. He memorised 100,000 aḥādīth.
  • On his deathbed, Abū Zurʿah still continued teaching his students through which he was given the tawfīq to recite the shahādah before he passed.
  • Abū Ḥātim Ar-Rāzī (رحمه الله) was referred to as ‘Al-Imām’. He was a shaykh and teacher of the Scholars of Ḥadīth.
  • Abu Ḥātim travelled for 7 years, over 3000 miles on foot at age 20 seeking knowledge.
  • ʿAbdurraḥmān Ibn Abī Ḥātim’s first teacher was his father.
  • Allāh granted ʿAbdurraḥmān Ibn Abī Ḥātim tawfīq to perform his first Ḥajjatul-Islām.
  • ʿAbdurraḥmān ibn Abī Ḥātim (رحمه الله) had exemplary zeal for knowledge and acts of ʿibādah.
  • The two methods of reviewing and attaining knowledge with a student:
    • At-Taḥdīth – when the ʿālim recites the ḥādīth to the students.
    • Al-ʿArḍ – where a student reads a text to the teacher and the teacher listens and affirms.
  • An example of Al-ʿArḍ is where the Prophet’s (ﷺ) used to revise Qurʾān with Jibrīl during Ramaḍān.
  • From his tarbiyah is that his father (Abī Ḥātim) did not let him memorise aḥādīth or any other knowledge, until after he had memorised the Qurʾān.
  • Seeking knowledge has a step-by-step system.
  • Some benefits derived from the question Ibn Abī Ḥātim asked the two imāms:
    • Knowledge is taken from the scholars.
    • We are steadfast upon what they were upon.
    • There is ijmāʿby the scholars on the creed of Ar-Rāziyayn.

Lesson 02 – Īmān is Both Speech and Action

  • Ibn Abū Ḥātim Ar-Rāzī asked both his father and Abū Zurʿah (his nephew) about the ʿAqīdah of the scholars of Ahlus-Sunnah in the surrounding lands.
  • Benefits From This Narration:
    1. ʿIlm is taken from the ʿulamāʾ.
    2. Importance of Riḥlah fī Ṭalab al-ʿIlm – travelling for the purpose of seeking knowledge.
    3. ʿAqīdah is the foundation upon which the rest of the religion is built on.
    4. The people of Sunnah are all united upon uṣūl. There is ijmāʿ in their ʿAqīdah.
  • Imām Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn (رحمهالله) advised not to take knowledge from a man who stays in his town and writes knowledge in it, but does not travel in search of ḥadīth.
  • Example of ar-Riḥlah is seen in the story of Mūsá and Khidr.
  • Fiqh is the knowledge of the practical Sharīʿah rulings acquired from their detailed evidences.
  • Corelation between Fiqh and ʿAqīdah – Fiqh is the study of the actions that we perform. These actions are built upon the ʿAqīdah that a person has in his chest.
  • ʿAqīdah is tied into our actions – e.g. knowing that Takbīratul-Iḥrām makes certain acts impermissible in the ṣalāh.
  • Various titles of the People of Ḥaqq: Ahlus-Sunnah, Ahlul-Ḥadīth, Al-Firqatun Nājiya, Al-Jamāʿah, Aṭ-Ṭā’ifatun Manṣūrah and As-Salafiyūn.
  • Matters of Uṣūl and Matters of Furūʿ (subsidiary issues) are connected.
  • Misconception that Uṣūl is ʿAqīdah and Furūʿ is Fiqh.
  • Uṣūl occurs in ʿAqīdah and likewise in affairs of Fiqh and in actions.
  • Īmān is statement of the tongue, action of the limbs, and belief in the heart. It increases with obedience to Allāh, and decreases with obedience to Shayṭān.
  • The 3 elements of īmān are: statement, action and belief.
  • The Salaf mentioned 2 elements – statement and action.
  • To explain this difference, we say īmān is:
    1. statement of the tongue and statement of the heart.
    2. action of the heart and action of the limbs.
  • The statement of the heart comprises of Taṣdīq – firm belief in the revelation and then having Iqrār – firm resolve to execute this belief.
  • Examples of actions of the heart – reliance upon Allāh, shyness, hope, fear etc.
  • Saying that īmān is only belief in the heart is not the īmān with Ahlus-Sunnah.
  • This is the belief of sects like Al-Jahmiyyah and the Al-Murjiʿah.
  • The correct view is that īmān is 3 elements: statement, action and belief.
